Sussurro is Brazilian for “whisper”. Sussurro’s music can indeed whisper like a soft evening breeze. Then in the next breath it can explode with the irresistible rhythms of Carnivale in Rio and the Samba. Founded in 2003 by guitarist Peter Toohey and percussionist / drummer Doug Gallacher, Sussurro worked in a trio format with singer Jeanne Bastos performing traditional bossa nova and samba as well as quirky latin takes on material as diverse as Sting and Norah Jones. Since the addition of the extraordinary keyboard talents of Gavin Ahearn, Sussurro has continued to explore and expand its repertoire, and itself. Now at its dynamic zenith as a sextet, it contains some of the cream of Australia’s musicians and is a sought after drawcard for festivals and corporate events.
Born in Bahia in the north of Brazil, Jeanne’s style reflects the melting pot that is Bahia. African, Portuguese and indigenous influences blend beautifully in her animated performances. Paying her dues early touring Europe with the legendary Carlinhos Brown and Timbalada, Jeanne went on to spend 7 years entertaining in Japan before calling Sydney home. Apart from her unique vocal performances Jeanne adds her skills on guitar and traditional percussion.
As a fine jazz and classical guitarist, Peter has had a long affair with Brazilian music both as a solo artist and leading small groups. One of Sydney’s sought after arrangers, he brings those talents as well to shape the distinctive sound of Sussurro.
Emerging as one of Australia’s formidable musical talents Gavin has two CDs under his own name. One recorded at One Soul Studios in New York, the other here at Paradise Studios guesting the great Dale Barlow. Aside from his vibrant, lyrical style on keyboards, Gavin’s collaboration with Peter in the arranging department has generated the unique textures and soundscapes of Sussurro.
In the “engine room” Sussurro boasts the fine talents of drummer TOBY HALL and bassist PETER GRAY. Percussion duties are shared by some of the country’s best, DOUG GALLACHER, CALVIN WELCH and TIM BRADLEY.
